Siksali is a non-profit regional organization in the south-east of Estonia that works mainly in the fields of informal and non-formal education, environmental awareness and rural development, including the development of rural tourism.
The Center is located in the border area, near Latvia and Russia, on the edge of the Haanja Natural Park, which has the natural resource of Gerat for the development of ecotourism. This is one of the most underdeveloped parts of the country, with higher unemployment and lower wages. The population is constantly decreasing, many people are moving to larger cities or abroad.
The Center was created in 2002 to help farmers find new ideas for alternative economic activities in the countryside and rural tourism and ecotourism can be considered as perfect possibilities to be developed. In this way, our main target group is the rural population, including the unemployed, at risk of social and economic exclusion due to their peripheral situation and their difficult socioeconomic situation. We are constantly looking for ways to improve your life, find new possibilities for job creation, activate rural areas, etc.
For more than 10 years, we have worked with more than 20 EU-funded projects in the field of rural development. This includes, for example, work with the rural tourism sector (which often combines both small-scale agricultural sectors and food sectors). In relation to work with unemployed people and entrepreneurship, we were involved in a PROACT Joint Action project and the Grundtvig 1 CAERA project, which were to activate unemployed rural women to create their own company. The unemployed have been an important target group of many of our LdV ToI projects.
In 2003-2005, we were partners in a project of Common Action - Promotion of Rural Opportunities and Cultural Traditions. We carry out different training courses for young women who live in rural areas who want to start their own business or improve their position in the labor market
In 2005-2007 we were partners in a 2-year project Grundtvig 1 CAERA - Curriculum for Adult Education in Rural Areas. The project combined the themes of rural activation and rural tourism in a set of training courses and support activities for European rural inhabitants. In 2006-2008, we participated in a two-year Leonardo da Vinci pilot project: the "How to manage my own skills" project to enable the unemployed to assess their skills and competencies to pursue a career in the tourism field.
In 2007-2009 we participated in an innovation transfer project Leonardo da Vinci AGRONATUR, a project that combines active tourism and nature tourism to create employment in rural areas In total, we have completed more than 100 projects (international, national, regional and local) with the SDC as coordinator or partner. We have also had more than 10 years of cooperation with other European countries and organizations thanks to the Leonardo da Vinci and Grundtvig program, the Swedish Institute, the Nordic Council of Ministers, etc., not to mention the many Estonian national programs. We have hosted dozens of mobility projects across Europe.
SDC was named official cooperation partner of the Estonian Center for Environmental Investment and coordinated the Environmental Environment Program in Võru County from 2003-2009. The SDC will participate in the project, participating in all the agreed activities. We will use our dissemination networks to disseminate the project both in Estonia and abroad.
